The T-Bird also has great pick up, thanks to its 280-hp V8 engine, and it has good interior space behind the seats - and the trunk is more than adequate to accommodate several cases of wine. Some of those sports cars I tested were just too small, and I really felt a bit vulnerable in them. I love the look of the car, thanks to the traditional logo of the "Thunder Bird" with turquoise colors, and it also has a solid, substantial feel. Since we have lots of good weather in Sonoma, this happens frequently. We live in Wine Country, and we love to put the top down and drive through the vineyards and visit wineries. It was a silver hard-top convertible, and on the side were the words "50th Anniversary 1955-2005." It was love at first sight for me.Īfter a test drive and some negotiations, the T-Bird was mine, and it's become our touring car. There on the screen was a used 2005 Ford Thunderbird. It’s easily the best-looking Thunderbird since the mid-’50s original (that wouldn’t be difficult) – and maybe even the best-looking of all.John thought that I should have something "cool, fun and sexy," which (for me) translated into "a convertible, and probably a sports car." I test-drove several cars over the next few weeks, but none were just right for me.

Where even the likes of BMW have struggled (I never thought the Z8 was a pretty sight), Ford has successfully repeated this difficult visual manoeuvre with the latest Mustangs. Find a black one with a black cabin and you’d have a beautiful dual-purpose grand touring convertible that makes a rare and interesting alternative to those ubiquitous SLs.Īs the final iteration of the Thunderbird line (at least up to now), the 11th-generation cars probably suffer from being lumped in with all those other – mostly awful – ‘retro’ designs that appeared around the same time.īut I don’t think that criticism is justified for me, this is a car that evokes the best elements of its predecessors but still has a fresh, clean feel of its own. Here, possibly, lies the answer to the interior ‘problem’.
